SD57 Board of Trustees: Election & Advance Polls Information for June 2023

School District No. 57 School Board Trustees (total board seats = 7) have the job to engage their communities in building and maintaining a school system that reflects local priorities, values and expectations. School trustees guide the work of their school district and set plans, policies and the annual budget – they work to develop and provide district level strategic goals and directions.

What are the roles of boards of education and trustees?

Boards of education share a co-governance relationship with the provincial government through the Ministry of Education and Child Care. BCSTA supports member boards in this relationship.

The Ministry of Education and Child Care sets the general direction for K-12 education, including the curriculum, funding amounts and the legal framework within which boards operate. School district Boards (Trustees) are responsible for governing school districts based on the educational aspirations of their local communities and in accordance with the policy direction established by government.

The most important reason to maintain our
current system of governance (through
local boards of education) is that boards can
make a difference a difference in student
achievement outcomes. That, in fact, is
their key purpose. Studies in Canada and
across North America have confirmed that:
when they are practicing good governance,
focusing on a clear vision for student
achievement and well-being, directing
resources to achieve that vision, recruiting
a strong superintendent and management
teams, and collaborating with that team,
boards of education have a significant
positive effect on student achievement.
