Notice of DPAC Executive Appointments

At the January 10th DPAC meeting the following DPAC Executive appointments were made, for the following reasons:

Approximately 3 months ago, Cliff MacLachlan; “Director at Large”, submitted his resignation. To fill this vacant position Michelle Rolfes was nominated, accepted the nomination, and was appointed to the “Director at Large” position.

Approximately 2 weeks ago DPAC Executive Secretary; Michelle Hourie submitted her resignation to accept employment with the School District. To fill this vacant position Marilyn Langlois was nominated, accepted the nomination, and was appointed to the “Executive Secretary” position.

Please join us in thanking both Cliff MacLachlan and Michelle Hourie for the time and dedication they have contributed to DPAC and avocation for quality public education in our School District. We wish them all the best.

In closing please congratulate both Marilyn Langlois and Michelle Rolfes for being willing to step up and fill the vacant DPAC Executive positions.

Kindergarten Registration and Transfer Process

Kindergarten registration will be taking place Wednesday, February 2, 2011.

The transfer process will start Monday, February 7, 2011, and closing Friday, March 18, 2011.

The policy that will govern how these proceed will be finalized after the Tuesday, January 25, 2011 Public Board of Education Meeting. It is possible that the policy will be the proposed 5119 policy, a revised proposed policy, or the 2008 revision of the policy.

FSA information

The Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA) – tests of reading, writing and math delivered province-wide every year in Grades 4 and 7 – are coming up. Schools are expected to administer the tests between Jan. 17 and Feb. 25 this year.

The B.C. Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils (BCCPAC) has  developed an FSA information kit for parents. Find it here.

The B.C. Education Ministry has prepared a brochure advising parents why it thinks the tests are important. In summary, it says the tests help determine whether students are learning vital skills and improving over time, if there are any significant trends in schools, districts or across the province and how certain groups of students (such as aboriginals) are doing. The BCTF plans to distribute its own brochures in opposition to the tests, saying they are expensive, contribute nothing to learning, detract from more meaningful activities and lead to school rankings by the Fraser Institute.
